Candidate Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the Screening Process:

How long does the screening process take (when will I get presented to clients)?

The length of our screening process varies (anywhere from one day to two weeks), and the time frame largely depends on your responsiveness. Prompt communication and completing paperwork quickly will expedite the process, as well as responsive references (make sure they know we will be reaching out) with the background check being the final step.

How many references do you need? Why do you reach out to references before considering me for employment representation?

The number of references we require varies, but is typically between 3-5 long term references within the last 10 years. We obtain references once and use their feedback multiple times for candidates applying to positions through Mom’s Best Friend, so references are not contacted multiple times for each application unless a potential employer requests to speak with them and the reference has given permission to do so.
Our team contacts all references in order to verify work history, experience, and reliability, and is a crucial part of our screening process to ensure we are representing the best of the best in the industry. Once the screening process is complete, candidates can focus on making the best match with employers rather than worrying about completing the vetting process with each application.

Does performing household duties in combination with nannying, or managing a family member’s household qualify as experience?

Our clients are looking for direct long-term experience in these fields outside of the nanny role. Additionally, while assisting a family member is valuable, we are unable to consider this type of experience as professional work history.

What type of job openings does your agency place?

Mom’s Best Friend places a variety of household staff, including Personal Assistants, Personal Chefs, Estate Managers, Housekeepers, and Household Managers. Referrals for candidates with specific experience in these roles are welcomed.

Does your placement service cost money?

No, our service is free of charge for applicants. We are dedicated to helping household staff find positions with exceptional clients.

How do you protect our confidentiality?

We prioritize your confidentiality, sharing only necessary details. Reference contact info is also confidential unless they have agreed to share their information. Personal documents are accessible only to our staff, except during background checks upon hire.

How do you stay up to date on current job market trends and changes?

We stay informed about market trends by monitoring demand and participating in industry associations, monitoring job boards and other agency trends, attending webinars, and annual conferences.

How long have you been in business?

Since 1994, serving household staff and clients with a commitment to excellence.

What is your approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion?

We screen based on standardized criteria to ensure fairness and avoid discrimination based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or other factors.

Questions about the Job Search Process:

How can I make my profile stand out? What will help me get interviews with clients?

A polished, professional profile with detailed job descriptions on past employment, a biographical statement showcasing personality, and a professional photo enhances your chances. Providing multiple relevant references, including letters of recommendation, is crucial.

What is your process for matching candidates with job openings?

Candidates are notified via email when a job is available. We encourage candidates to review job details before applying, considering factors like experience, commute, and specific requirements.

How long does it usually take to find a suitable job for a candidate?

We are very careful with our matches, so that means that timing will vary depending on what jobs are available, and whether they are a match with your experience, area, schedule, pay, etc. Our desire is for placements to have long-term success, and that means there is not a definitive timeline to match each candidate.

What kind of support can I expect during the job search process?

We offer comprehensive support, from advice on interviews to scheduling, feedback, contract facilitation, and ongoing assistance.

I’m interviewing with clients but haven’t been hired yet, what’s going wrong?

It may simply be a matter of finding the right match. Ensure prompt communication, prepare references for calls, maintain a professional online presence, and focus on making a positive impression during interviews.

Will you let me know if a position I apply for is not interested in moving forward with me?

Feel free to inquire about your application status, as due to volume, we cannot notify candidates of every outcome.

How much do jobs pay? Do they provide benefits?

Pay varies based on market conditions, job specifics, and experience. Benefits typically include paid vacation, holidays, and sick time, with some clients offering additional perks like health insurance or retirement plans.

Questions about the Job Placement:

Do clients take taxes out of my paycheck?

Yes, all placements adhere to legal payment practices, including tax withholding. We provide clients with payroll service contacts as needed.

Do I have to drive my own car on the job?

Most positions require the use of your car for commuting or job-related tasks. When this is the case, clients reimburse for gas mileage at the IRS reimbursement rate.

Are you available to help after the placement?

Absolutely! We offer ongoing support, advice, and assistance throughout your employment and beyond.
